Drive south from Taupo on SH 1. After passing Hallett Bay, then Jellicoe Point, get ready to park on the left opposite the north end of the Motutere motor camp. The track climbs through regenerating bush above SH 1. There are great views along the track of Motutere Bay in the south, Motutaiko Island and Jellicoe Point to the north. The track descends through large kanuka trees, groves of young matipo and passes beside cliffs of volcanic ignimbrite erupted by the Taupo volcano. For a short time the track follows an old man-made terrace which was part of the main road construction then crosses the Waipehi Stream. There are toilets and picnic areas at the lakeshore reserve of Jellicoe Point just across the road from the end of the track.Walkers are advised to return via the track to Motutere or arrange to be picked up at your finishing point. This section of the main road is too busy and narrow to safely walk along. |
