One mile up the road from Lake Tarawera is what remains of the village of Te Waiora, which was buried under two metres of volcanic mud and ash on the terrible night of June 10 1886. At the buried village you'll view evidence of New Zealand's biggest natural disaster, in which 147 Maori and 6 Europeans died. Wander through the excellent museum and experience the enthralling history of this Victorian village. Inspect excavations of several sites and descend the steep walkway through dense bush and spectacular waterfalls.
