Tongariro National Trout Centre

If you haven't visited the Tongariro National Trout Centre, you are in for a nice surprise! It was April 1904 when the first rainbow trout was caught in the Taupo fishing district. It weighed 1.36kg. Since then the popularity of this region as a prized trout fishery has increased, to the point where approximately 70,000 - 80,000 fishing licenses are now sold every year. The fishery is world renowned for the quality and size of the fish caught and is particularly special in that it is a wild fishery - the population sustained by wild trout and not by hatchery stocking. The Tongariro National Trout Centre has played an important role over the years in educating people about the fishery, and raising awareness among the public of the importance of freshwater conservation and the need to create a sustainable fishery resource. There is a fantastic historic collection of antique cane rods and an impressive display of reels, some dating back to the 1800s. Other displays illustrate the work the fishery team does to manage the fishery and explain radio monitoring of trout, electric fishing, the life cycle of trout, drift diving, unwanted pest fish and apprehending poachers. The attractions at the centre include the underwater viewing chamber where visitors can observe wild trout in the Waihukahuka Stream, the kid's fishing pond, the hatchery facilities, and a pleasant walk beside the Tongariro River.
