Whirinaki Rainforest Treks

Whirinaki Forest Park has something for everyone, with terrain ranging from flats to steep uplands. The park, known as a 'dinosaur forest', has many tall trees that are centuries old. Sights include giant podocarps, views of the river cutting through an ancient lava flow, and caves with pumice deposits and remnants of the Taupo eruption nearly 2000 years ago. The Whirinaki Escape Eco-cultural one-day guided walk gives visitors a 'window look' into how the Maori of Te Urewera once interacted with the whenua (land) and how they retain their closeness with this most valued of taonga (treasures) to this day. This is a fully inclusive, catered one-day package of about 10 hours duration. The natural features and resources are highlighted by way of flora and fauna interpretation. A glimpse of the rich history and heritage of this vast land is revealed. Not all can be told, for much must remain within, as determined by tribal tikanga (protocol). But what can be shared will be, in the true spirit of manaakitanga (hospitality).

Pricing: Fully-escorted package. (Inclusive of NZ Goods and Service Tax. Prices effective to September 2004.) NZ$155 per adult, NZ$85 per child aged 5 to 15 [*Subject to exchange rate fluctuations] The trip includes: - Travel by mini coach from Rotorua or Taupo
Travel Time: 10 minutes drive to pick up.
