Tongariro National Park - World Heritage Area

Situated south of Turangi the Tongariro National Park includes the volcanoes of Mt Ruapehu, Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngauruhoe. Tongariro is New Zealand's oldest national park- the second to be created in the world, and a dual World Heritage area. This status recognises the park's important Maori cultural and spiritual associations as well as its outstanding volcanic features. It is a place of extremes and surprises, a place to explore and remember. From herb fields to forests, from tranquil lakes to desert-like plateau and active volcanoes - Tongariro has them all. There are numerous day walks within the park, ranging from 10 minutes to a full day. One of the most stunning one day walks in New Zealand is The Tongariro Crossing. This track passes over varied and spectacular volcanic terrain. In the presence of active volcanoes you can experience some of Tongariro National Park's special gifts. A cold mountain spring, lava flows, an active crater, steam vents, emerald-coloured lakes and magnificent views combine to make this an enjoyable and memorable trip. The Tongariro Crossing is an extending full-day hike into a mountain environment and it travels over steep and often difficult terrain. It is important to have the appropriate clothing, equipment and fitness.
